Brown Hares– we were lucky to see three of these, the fastest land mammal in the uk, when we were in Lincolnshire this week. Capable of speeds of 45 mph, these beautiful animals are suffering from modern farming techniques but on this reserve near Beckingham they were easy to watch. They feed on young grass and cereals, and young tree bark, and raise several litters between February and September. Introduced to the UK in the Iron Age, they nest in a shallow depression called a form, in the grass or ground. Conditions: A mild start followed by a blue-skied, sunny day. Temperature: Max 11- Min 3c.
