12th September 2014

The results of the Big Butterfly Count for 2014 are just out with some worrying results. Despite it being a very warm July, August was the coldest for 20 years so this, and the very wet winter may have affected numbers. The Peacock came top for the first time ever, though its recordings were down by 30%, which shows how much of a decline

there was for many others in the  top ten- number 2, as last year, was the Gatekeeper, number 3 the Small White (the recordings of all the Whites were down on last year) and, having a better year coming fourth (we had them in the garden for the first time for 5 years) was the Small Tortoiseshell. The Meadow Brown, which seemed to be around quite a lot, was actually down 38%. Relatively, the Red Admiral, Common Blue and Speckled Wood did quite well. Here are photo’s of the top four! Conditions: A still but mostly cloudy, dry day. Temperature: Max 18- Min 12C.
