28th July 2014

Here are a few shots of the wonderfully acrobatic Swallows on the pond at Monyash. It’s the long streamers of Swallows tails that makes them particularly manoeuvrable. The males have longer streamers than the females, and females choose to mate with those with longer streamers as they are the more successful individuals. Swallows drink from the pond, bathe their chests in the water and feed on flies just above the surface. The photo’s conjure up the wonderful entertainment we were lucky to experience on several mornings recently. (There were far more photo’s of ‘where the swallows had just been’ than these of the birds themselves!) Conditions: Another dry, hot day, with long spellsIMG_0100IMG_0223 of sunshine. Temperature: Max IMG_1036IMG_104723- Min 15 CIMG_1074
