This orange-peel clematis keeps it’s attractive fluffy seed heads throughout winter, reminiscent of the habit of it’s wild relative ‘old man’s beard’ p.birds.13 408or ‘travellers joy’ which clambers through hedges and copses, especially on chalky soil.

Conditions: Rainy intervals, with southerly winds to 20mph. Temperature: max 8c min 2c                                 

Winter food shortages in the wild bring great spotted woodpeckers like this female nearer to the back window.
